Have you ever had a dream that seems irrational but no matter what that dream stays in your heart? I know I have and it has been God's direction. There are times when God asks us to just take the first step toward that dream and if he has a plan for that dream to be a part of our story then he will continue to open the doors to make it possible and if it is not from him he will shut those doors.
The pandemic was the best and worst thing that has ever happened. I was in seventh grade when my whole entire world came to an abrupt stop. I lost most if not all of my friends, school had been moved online, and my favorite thing of all time summer camp was virtual. I quickly spiraled to my lowest point. At that point, I couldn't see how I would ever recover back to how life was before the pandemic. I was correct my life was never the same after the pandemic but so much better! A dream of mine since I was a little girl was to be on a school sports team. For years I had dreams about being on my high school track team, considering I have a physical disability that affects my legs I never thought this was possible, but the dream was still in the back of my mind and my heart.
I tried many sports when I was younger both adaptive and non-adaptive and none of them I enjoyed doing for more than just a year or two. So I figured that sports was just not my thing. In the summer of 2021, my parents had been doing lots of research trying to find me something to be a part of. they brought up wheelchair racing, it was something that I had heard of when I was young but had no interest in trying. There was a local team that I would be able to compete with and I soon learned that I could compete with my high school track team in wheelchair racing as well as with the team of wheelchair racers. I knew this was God's direction, I had a dream and he was going to use me in some way through adaptive sports. Of course, I was scared at first but said yes and I immediately fell in love.
At the end of June, I went to my first practice with the wheelchair racing team, and by the first week of August, I was on a Zoom call with the head Track and Field coach at my high school. I was welcomed onto the team with open arms. Now as a junior, I look back at how far I've come since I started this journey. I have competed at the State Championships for my school and at Nationals for my wheelchair racing team.
What is God calling you today?
How can you take the first step toward that dream?
