Adaptive Sports 101

Joining adaptive sports is one of the best things you can do to find community, build strength, and overall live a happier healthier life. In this post, you will find how to find adaptive sports near you. 

There are a few different big organizations that are known for adaptive sports. In this post, I am going to go over the process for finding sports through Move United and the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which focuses on competitive adaptive sports. But I can certainly do others in the future.

Step 1. The first thing you want to do is go to the Move United Website. It should look something like this.

Step 2. Then go to the tap that says sports. It should look something like this.

Scroll down till you find the section that says Adaptive Sports. Click on that and it will bring you to a page where you can read about the different adaptive sports offered through Move United.

Step 3. Once you have found a sport you are interested in. You are going to go to the locations tab up at the top. Which should bring you a screen that looks like this.

This is where you can find organizations that offer the sport you are interested in near you. For this example, I chose Track and Field in Illinois.

STEP 4. Then click on the name of the organization. This will provide you with important information such as contact information and specific locations.

A lot of different teams can provide you with loner equipment for your sport but it can be hard if the equipment doesn't fit you correctly. The Challenged Athlete Foundation focuses on providing the proper equipment for adaptive athletes. Equipment and travel costs for adaptive sports can be very expensive but the Challenged Athlete Foundation does grants to help subsidize the cost of this. Their Grant traditionally opens in September and closes in November.
